I was having a one-on-one session with a new client this morning. The first thing I do is tell our client's a little about myself and my journey as a single parent, so they know up front that I can relate to them. It's always interesting to see how our clients process the information. Some will share right back and others just sit and force a smile.
Today the client shared right back, only it wasn't about her life, it was about something that she saw while riding the bus. There was a drunk couple on the bus, it was the middle of the day. The woman, of the couple, tried to start an argument with another woman on the bus. She was making false accusations against her. The woman being accused sat there ignoring the drunk woman. This wasn't what the drunk woman expected, so she started yelling, cussing, and bating the passenger. However, the passenger looked at the drunk woman and said "Jesus loves you." This made the drunk woman even madder and she started to become physically aggressive with the passenger. The passenger grabbed the wrist of the drunk woman as her hand came close and repeated again "Jesus loves you." In the meantime the bus driver had pulled over and told the drunk couple they had to get off the bus. They exited and the passenger apologized as she also headed for the exit. The bus driver told the passenger that she didn't need to leave, just the drunk couple. But the passenger insisted that she would also go.
What a beautiful story of a Christian woman doing the right thing! As I sat thinking to myself of all the beautiful meanings of the situation, my client said "Can you believe that?! Can you believe that no one else on that bus was willing to stand up and help defend that passenger?!" Hmmm... to be honest that thought hadn't crossed my mind. My client said that if she wasn't pregnant she definately would have stepped in to defend this innocent woman, but she didn't want the baby she is carrying to be harmed.
A crowded bus and a potentially dangerous situation but everyone there pretended like nothing was happening. What would you have done? Would YOU jump in?
